“Spotlight on Partners” series
University of Bristol
Partner University of Bristol.
For this spotlight, we are heading back to the UK. The 6th D-STANDART partner we wish to introduce to you is the University of Bristol, a leading institution renowned for its outstanding teaching and research.
UoB is named in the top 5% of universities globally, but also the world’s 17th most sustainable university, according to a new QS global league table.
The university hosts over 30,000 students from 184 countries, and focuses on research areas ranging from social justice, creative and cultural industries, equitable and sustainable health to digitalisation, supercomputing, netzero and climate change. UoB works with partners in more than 40 countries, including HorizonEurope collaborations that the university has been promoting.
UoB is also a global leader in composites research and application. Bristol Composites Institute, which D-STANDART researchers are a part of, conducts frontline research on manufacture, structural design and material properties of composites to address the overarching grand challenges of sustainability and GHG reductions. BCI benefits from well-established major industry partnerships to support and exploit its research across sectors. The institute has, for instance, a long-standing collaboration with Rolls-Royce, and more recently a strategic partnership with Vestas.
UoB researchers bring to D-STANDART their skills and knowledge in high-fidelity modelling, and more broadly in manufacturing modelling, fatigue testing, AI and ML. In the project, UoB leads the work on effect of manufacturing defects focused on achieving an experimentally validated simulation capability for predicting their formation in composite laminates, following a precise “taxonomy of defects”, and the ensuing impact on the fatigue performance at the meso-scale.
